Just a few thoughts for consideration...

Lord of the Rings Trilogy (oops, guess it's not American)
Bourne trilogy
Saving Ryan's Privates
Big Lebowski
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (not American either)

just for fun, I think everyone should see Idiocracy - to see where we're headed if we don't wake up.

Yeah UJB, you're right, Private Ryan, Lebowski and Bourne were defining for their Genre's.

Just never could connect with Lord of the Rings, and to my friends dissaproval, the whole "Hobbit" trilogy back in the day.

What's the new deal - Harry Potter?

Not ashamed to admit it - I like the Harry Potter books, and the movies have been great. Really have brought the vision to life. (Wouldn't call them new, btw - they have shaped more than a decade of young readers - thank god kids have found something they can read!) Come to think of it, I really like involved, multi-part stories - LOTR, Potter, Dune. I'd love some rec's for other sci-fi/fantasy serials. I've watched the LOTR films a number of times, I think they hold up well.

Lord of the Rings are considered American, I think because they are New Line $$. Part 3 won Best Picture. I loved those films, but I'm not sure that they are going to age well. Part 2 pretty much rocks from start to finish, though.
